A Canadian baby has been issued a health document that doesn’t specify male or female, in what campaigners are claiming is a possible “world first.”
Searyl Atli Doty was born in British Columbia, “outside the medical system,” and did not undergo a genital inspection after birth.
Parent Kori Doty, who is non-binary trans, wants to avoid assigning gender to the child.
“It is up to Searyl to decide how they identify, when they are old enough to develop their own gender identity,” Doty said in the statement. “I am not going to foreclose their choices based on an arbitrary assignment of gender at birth based on an inspection of their genitals.”
Now I know this is a hot button issue right now but this all seems really confusing to me. First of all there are Canadian “Genital Inspections” when you’re born? Whoever has that job, if it’s not a required position to move up in the Canadian medial world, aka if that person went to school to check out baby dicks and child cooters, that person is a sicko. I get kids play with toy trucks and doll houses, but you really should outgrow finding miniature scaled objects entertaining at like 7. Psychotic
Gender is a tricky thing in 2017, and I’m too woke to ever assume gender. At least that’s what I say to mothers who get really mad at me when I refer to their baby as “it” when I don’t want to hold them. It’s because I’m too socially conscious, not at all that even a split second of responsibility for a tiny little completely dependent life frankly terrifies me.
The crux of the issue I guess is that the child’s Heath Card denotes it’s sex as ‘U’. Now I’m all for the classic denoting Sex as ‘Yes Please’ or the 2017 version, Sex: ‘Perhaps, given the circumstances leading up to the act both previously and/or immediately, but make sure you are clear in asking and I am able to consent under the full extent of the law’, but I don’t get ‘U’. No seriously bro, I don’t get you. Wanting whats best for your child is awesome. Not forcing them to be something they’re not, all for it. Letting them choose, that’s just swell. But if you wanted them to have an easier time growing up probably don’t name them “Searyl Atli Doty” and maybe don’t force them to be a martyr of a campaign they cant comprehend or consent to before they can even hold their own head up.
